Upperthorpe Map

Upperthorpe, Sheffield, South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, England, S6 3FT, United Kingdom

Upperthorpe is a Sheffield suburb located west of the city centre. It is a residential area delimited to the north by Walkley, to the west by Crookes, and to the south by Netherthorpe. The exact date of the first settlement in the Upperthorpe area is unknown; the name is a blend of the Danish term „thorpe“, which means „outlying farmstead“, and a surname, which was the Middle English word for a cooper. This suggests that the settlement was built in the 9th or 10th century, when both Viking and Old English words had been blended into local dialect.
