Glossop is a market town in the High Peak Borough. It is 24 kilometres east of Manchester, 39 kilometres north of Sheffield, and 51 kilometres north of the county town of Matlock. It sits between 150 and 300 meters above sea level and is surrounded to the south, east, and north by the Peak District National Park. Glossop derives its name from a small hamlet that gave its name to an ancient parish mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. Architecturally, the area is dominated by structures made of local sandstone, several of which are grade II listed, notably Glossop Gasworks. The Dinting railway viaduct and two large historic cotton mills remain.
