Barnsley is a market town in the English county of South Yorkshire. It is the principal settlement of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough and the fourth-largest settlement in South Yorkshire. In 2021, the town had a population of 96,888, while the borough as a whole had a population of 244,600. It is historically located in the West Riding of Yorkshire, between the cities of Sheffield, Manchester, Doncaster, Wakefield, and Leeds, as well as the larger towns of Rotherham and Huddersfield. Former industries in Barnsley include linen, coal mining, glass manufacturing, and textiles. Barnsley’s culture is steeped in its industrial background, and the city has a tradition of brass bands, which were originally formed as social organizations by the mining towns.
