Newark-on-Trent is a market town and civil parish in Nottinghamshire’s Newark and Sherwood region. It is located on the Trent River and was once an important inland port. Because it is located on a key Roman road, the Fosse Way, the town’s beginnings are most likely Roman. It developed up around Newark Castle and as a trade centre for wool and fabric. Newark’s market place is bordered with many historical buildings, and one of its most renowned monuments is St Mary Magdalene church, which has a 71-metre-high spire and is the town’s tallest structure. The church is the tallest in Nottinghamshire and can be seen as you enter or bypass Newark.
