Burngreave is a neighbourhood in Sheffield, located north of the city centre. It began to emerge in the second half of the nineteenth century. This area was previously mostly covered by Burnt Greave wood. The majority of the wood is occupied by Burngreave Cemetery, which was established in 1860. and expanded in the early 1900s. Grimesthorpe Lane, which goes through Burngreave, is an ancient road that follows the path of the Roman Rig, a man-made fortified ridge created by the Celtic Brigantes tribe that used to extend from near the Wicker to Mexborough.
