Doncaster, South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, England, United Kingdom
Doncaster is located in the Don Valley, east of the Pennines and west of the Humberhead Levels. According to the 2021 Census, the city proper has a population of 113,566 people. Doncaster is the second most populous town in South Yorkshire and the largest metropolitan district in England in terms of land size. With the expansion of coal mining, its population grew substantially. The closure of coal mines in the 1970s and early 1980s produced economic challenges; the town then rebuilt its service industry, taking advantage of the town’s good communication links with the rest of the UK. The municipality unsuccessfully requested for city status multiple times.
