Derby is a city in Derbyshire, as well as a unitary authority region. Derby was granted city status in 1977, and the current population is 261,400 people, according to the 2021 census. Derby is a centre for innovative transportation manufacturing, as it is home to Rolls-Royce, the world’s second largest aero-engine manufacturer. Bombardier Transportation has a manufacturing site at Derby Litchurch Lane Works, while Toyota Manufacturing UK has its headquarters in Burnaston, southwest of the city. Derby has also become an important cultural centre for the British deaf population. Derby’s strong sign language culture attracts a large number of deaf residents. Derby’s deaf population is estimated to be at least three times that of the national average, with only London having a greater deaf population.
