Handsworth, Sheffield, South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, England, S13 9DD, United Kingdom
Handsworth is a Sheffield suburb in the English county of South Yorkshire. It has a population of about 15,000 people and an area of about 13 square kilometres. It has five schools, four churches, a number of small stores, a major supermarket, and a variety of commercial and light industrial establishments. The traditional sword dancing is one piece of Handsworth history that has not faded. Although the team has written records that date back to the middle of the 19th century, the roots of this old rite are unknown. A group of eight guys do a nine-minute dance with long steel swords, ending with all the blades intertwined and carried aloft by one man. Traditional music is played, and the dancers wear military-style uniforms similar to those used by the Dragoons.
