Penistone is a market town and civil parish in Barnsley Metropolitan Borough. The town’s name appears regularly in lists of strange place names. Hartcliffe Tower, at 364 meters above sea level, offers views of the Woodhead bypass and the Dark Peak. The surrounding environment is mostly rural, with farming on rich, well-watered soil on mostly moderate hills ascending to the desolate moorland west of town. The area is known for its dry-stone walls, little hamlets, and farms surrounded by fields and livestock. The Whitefaced Woodland sheep are a tough breed native to the area.
